14-1-2017 A smoking Buell X1
31-1-2017 - 14-1-2017 What did we do Today: Helping A customer with a Smoking Buell X1 And fuel adjustment for a custom build
X1 sleeping over for winter, but is drinking a little to much oil... 1 liter @ 600 km and she is smoking like a diesel truck
plug checking first
a little to black for my taste
front one is wet from oil...
so what is wrong ? we know 3 year ago this engine was overhauled by a HD shop.. removing the coil connector to do a compression test
rear one is good
front one a little less but nothing to worry about
one step further... cylinder leak test, i take off the intake so i can hear the air leaking better
notice the leaking down the base gasket ? but for now i remove the crank timing plug so i can hear the leak down by the piston rings
top dead center compresion stroke... and tester hose screwed in
locking the engine in gear, and putting the rear brake on , slowly turning up the pressure
mnnn.. 2 psi loss @ 50 PSI, cold engine , not bad.. leaking by the rings as i can hear the air escape by the timing hole
base gasket is weaping
front cylinder is about the same loss, further inspection is needed... front head is first off
so exhaust needs to come off... ratteling things wear very hard
header off
front port wet from oil.. and i cannot see the valve guide ?
rear looks ok... valve guide sticking though the head a little
ok striping down... fuel tank off
1 missing screw
first make some space to remove the front head , breather pipe counter nuts loose
and pipes loose to remove the breather pipes
X1 with a carb... yep... ;-)
remove the coil to have a little space
and removing the rocker cover
loosening the rocker box
as the bike is in TDC front... no spring pressure on the rockers
pushrods out
and removing the intake manifold
now supporting the engine as we need to loosen the front mount
front engine mount bolts , some one put is a low grade one ( grade 8 ) that is a little low for these the F11 specification is more... will put a strong one back in
and loosening the head
a little greasy
the bore has some markings but that is not the problem
the intake also looks oily
taking out the valves , the keys can jump out if there sticking
valve stem is also to wet from oil
the guide is flush in the head and looks like there is a piece chipped off ?
valve has also to much play
intake valve... the valve seal was not on the sem anymore, douse not help , has also a little to much play.. i will send the head out to the machine shop , to check the press fitting on the guides... to have indication if it would be smart to check the rear head to !! really shitty when the rear drops a guide in 6000 km
for now the rear looks good
engine held upp with a strap... untill we have spoken with the customer
x1 ?
very long X1... home build project... needed some custom fuel mapping for the licence inspection, as the kept the original Fi from the X1 who better to go to ;-)
